The correctional institutions are in charge of various social reintegration businesses including reformation programs, prison labor, vocational training for Sentenced inmates, and the works regarding unconvicted prisoners. There are 38 nationwide institutions including 1 open prison, 1 female prison, 1 juvenile prison and 2 vocational training prisons, as well as 1 private correctional institution.

Detention Centers have been established and operated for the detention of unconvicted prisoners. Since July 1967, when the Seoul Detention Center took responsibility of detention function for the first time in Korea, 11 detention centers have been operated at present.
